A Guide for Single Female Travellers

As a woman in India, planning a solo trip comes with its own set of challenges and roadblocks. However, once you cross the hurdles, solo travelling can be the most liberating experience for you. It will give you renewed confidence and zest to conquer your life.

Although India has the reputation of a country which is unsafe for women, you will see the other side once you jet off on your solo trip. Several women are doing it, and their stories are nothing but inspiring. I am not saying that you can let your guard down. Instead, if it's your dream to go on a solo trip, it is doable.

Some of you may have a hard time convincing your family, but you can alleviate their fear by sharing your detailed itinerary. Planning everything down to the Tee will make them more comfortable, especially if it's your first solo trip.

    Select and research the place

Whether you want to visit a town in India or a global metropolitan city, make sure that it is the perfect place for you. If history interests you, a trip to Jaipur would be more meaningful than the beaches in Goa. However, if you want to relax and not worry about a thing on your holiday, I suggest the latter.

When you make an informed decision this way, your solo trip will be a more enriching experience.

Secondly, research the place well before you pack your bags. It should include all the well-known sightseeing spots and quaint cafes or hidden gems. Once you make a list of the things you would want to do, you will find it easier to plan your itinerary.

Apart from this, also ask if the city is friendly for travellers. Some places have famous rackets to dupe travellers. It is always better to be aware than sorry.

Schedule your arrival during the day

To be safe, I would advise you to land in your city in broad daylight. Avoid landing in evenings or late nights. It will help you make sense of the area around your hotel or hostel. If you do not find it safe, trust your guts and look for other arrangements. Always have alternatives figured out for such moments.

When you are researching the places to stay, always read the reviews on the internet. Previous travellers often leave crucial details about their experiences that can help you in making an informed decision.

Plan how you will travel to your hotel

Your hotel or hostel will be the first place that you will visit after landing in your destination. While you will learn about the local modes of transport within a day or two, it is recommended to plan how you will be reaching your place of stay.

Most European big towns have a metro facility from the airport to different areas of the city. If you are reaching late, it is advisable to spend on a taxi for the first commute.

    Safety tips

Fortunately or unfortunately, all women know how to be safe. Your solo trip is the time to refresh all your tips and tricks to avoid any unpleasant scenarios.

Firstly, always trust your intuition. We women have a strong sixth sense that has protected us on several occasions in the past. Your solo trip is the time to trust your instincts without giving it an iota of doubt. Whether you are in a restaurant or a park, if you do not feel comfortable, it is better to leave.

Secondly, do not divulge the place of your stay to anyone while you are travelling. You may make friends during your travel. While you may share other details of your life, the reason to share your hotel name should be strong.

Additionally, always be alert of your surroundings and be aware of what's happening around you. Alcohol and drugs can compromise your judgement. Thus, I would advise you to stay away from drinking when you are on a solo trip. Of course, a glass of wine in your hotel room won't do any harm.

If you want to step out in the night, always select a public place. If possible, try to ask around and get the reviews beforehand. Due to the cultural differences, it is always better to dress modestly. Lastly, do not trust anyone blindly and do not share your place of accommodation.

    Keep your belongings with you

As you go about your day, always keep your phone and wallet safe with you. Always bring a backpack for other valuables such as a camera, currency and passport. Keep your cash in several places and also carry two credit cards. It is recommended to keep your credit cards also at separate places.

    Pack light

The last advice is to pack light. When you are travelling alone, you don't want to be seen struggling with your bags. It can attract unnecessary attention that may land you in con games. Carry a backpack and ensure that you can easily lug it around.
